Mentoring statement
My goal as a mentor is to provide my trainees of all levels with opportunities and a vibrant, supportive environment to gain both research and professional skills during their pursuit of scientific discoveries. My focus is to strengthen each mentee’s skills in asking impactful scientific questions and devising creative methods to answer those questions. I provide my mentees with guidance to perform high quality scientific investigations with rigor and reproducibility.
Additionally, I strive to help my mentees identify and achieve their personal and professional goals while also supporting the broader goals of our entire research team. I respect the individuality, strengths and weaknesses, and creativity of each trainee. At the same time, I encourage each person to be a valuable team member who is willing to share their knowledge and assist others in achieving shared goals. The lab environment I foster is one of inclusion and respect where diversity is welcomed because it strengthens the lab community. I provide my mentees with regular and timely feedback and encourage open and respectful communication among all team members.
My goal for my mentees is that when they complete their time in the lab, they will have produced quality research and made impactful discoveries, strengthen their scientific communication skill, have a clear plan for their next career goal, and be well- prepared to take that next step. My hope is that they will leave knowing that they have been an important part of a supportive team and have acquired a network of resources that will be helpful in their next endeavor.
